Prepare for your hospital stay with this comprehensive checklist, covering all essentials to ensure your comfort and ease during recovery.
Packing Essentials:
- Nightshirts: Preferable to pyjamas due to catheter use and belly swelling. Avoid anything tight around the midriff.
- Nightgown: For taking short walks in the hospital ward.
- Underwear: Pack big, supportive panties/knickers for the journey home to help hold your stomach comfortably.
- Socks & Slippers: To keep your feet warm and help on your walks on the ward.
- Loose Clothes: For the journey home, bring loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and take off, avoiding anything tight around the belly.
- Comfortable Slip-On Shoes: For leaving the hospital.
Toiletries:
- Toothbrush & toothpaste.
- Comb or hairbrush.
- Lip balm.
- Deodorant.
- Shower gel, shampoo & conditioner.
- Moisturiser/skin care.

Recovery Aids:
- Stool softeners or laxatives (if advised by your doctor).

Comfort & Activities:

- Snacks & Drinks: Bring light snacks and drinks to keep you comfortable between meals.
- Headphones or Earbuds, Phone/Tablet & Charger: Load up your devices with entertainment (e.g., movies, games) to pass the time. Don’t forget chargers, and consider bringing a long cord, as the electric plug is sometimes far from the bed.
- Off-Line Entertainment: Books, magazines, crossword puzzles, pens, pencils, colouring books, or notebook.
- Small Cushion: To support your tummy when coughing or laughing. It’s also useful for the car ride home—place it between your stomach and the seat belt for added comfort and protection.
- Pillow: Bring your own pillow (if applicable).
- Comfort Objects: Favourite small personal items to soothe yourself.
Documents:
- ID and Insurance: Bring your ID, insurance card, and any advance directives.
- Medical Paperwork: Include any relevant medical documents or test results your surgeon may need.

Valuables:
- Leave at Home: Avoid bringing jewellery, large amounts of cash, or other valuables to the hospital.
