After an extensive surgery in September 2021 for borderline ovarian cancer and endometriosis, I was plunged into surgical menopause just a month after my 40th birthday. This experience exposed significant gaps and injustices in women’s care, sparking a drive and determination to make a change. This initiative was born out of a necessity to find answers for myself and others, and give meaning to an incredibly challenging journey. As a French Canadian without the nearby support of my family, this experience highlighted even more the need for a supportive community. Helping others through this project has been a lifeline and a source of strength during my toughest moments. It also gives me hope that with better support, we can embrace the changes that this experience brings and find a new way forward.

My surgical menopause journey began at 47. Two years earlier, I had one ovary removed and didn’t realise that the symptoms I experienced were menopause-related until after my second ovary was removed due to a cancer scare. Thankfully, it wasn’t cancer, but I was now navigating an unfamiliar world with little knowledge. I sought support through international groups until Emilie suggested starting a New Zealand group. I eagerly joined, as many treatments mentioned internationally weren’t available in NZ. My goal was to help other women access reliable, proven information in plain English. Although menopause care is evolving, surgical menopause still lacks adequate information and treatments here, which we aim to improve. In my personal life, I’m married, with two adult sons, and have a passion for fiber arts.
