Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

February is almost over, but there is still time to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, the deadliest gynaecological cancer in Aotearoa New Zealand.

There is currently no screening test for ovarian cancer, and symptoms are often vague, meaning many people are diagnosed too late.

Ovarian cancer can lead to surgical menopause, either as part of treatment or as a preventative measure for those at high risk. The impact of both ovarian cancer and surgical menopause can be life changing, physically and emotionally.

Symptoms to watch for:

  • Persistent bloating
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Feeling full quickly or difficulty eating
  • Frequent or urgent need to pee
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Unexplained fatigue or weight changes
  • Painful intercourse
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding

If these symptoms are new, persistent, or worsening, do not ignore them. Ask for further investigation and advocate for your health.
